The counsellor fails to respond to her own silence. In the normal course of human dialogue silences are usually owned in the sense that the conventions of human communication would dictate which party should normally break that silence. For example, if the client clearly finishes his statement and looks directly at the counsellor, the conventions of communication would normally lead the counsellor to respond. However, where counsellor paralysis exists the practitioner may not be able to observe or respond to these cues.
