Waste Paint Paint companies, in addition to inventories of off-spec paint, accumulate significant quantities of waste paint. Waste paint is an accumulation of customer returns, poor color matching, outdated paint, and damage at the warehouse. Appropriate disposition of this paint has been and contin- PROCESS SOLUTIONS 23 ues to be a challenge. However, beyond collection challenges, it requires significant imagination to determine where and how it can be used. Two solutions have been prevalent. One is to blend the same solventtype paint.

We were able to postpone investment in a brand-new plant for the foreseeable future. 2 Use of external heat exchanger. In one particular case the reaction with a certain chemical was highly exothermic so that the localized heat would impart color to the product. In order to prevent the color formation, the method of reactant addition was modified. 2 shows a simplified version of how the reaction exotherm was controlled. Reactant was added in the pump cavity, allowing vigorous mixing and controlling the exotherm using an external heat exchanger.

Attempts have been made to use these two methods, but still the waste-paint challenge exists as either method requires effort. There are two other alternatives for the waste paint, especially the water-based latex. It can be used as a raw material for new batches of paint. This is feasible but requires constant attention, as the raw materials (waste paint) can vary from day to day. Since this effort is a constant challenge compared to use of virgin raw materials, interest wanes and the process is stopped.
