In early Lunenburg the settlers relied primarily on rolling the hogsheads or, less frequently, floating the hogsheads downriver on canoes. ''9 If a planter wished to negotiate one of the rivers in the region, he might rig two canoes together with crossbeams on which two hogsheads were placed for the trip downstream. 40 The important fact about all these options is that they tended to be suited only to planters engaged in a relatively modest production of the crop.

This practice extended the reach of the established church, but it also undermined still further the authority of the church, for the diffusion of both the minister's energies and the parish's meager resources made it impossible to create a single physical setting in which the lessons and rituals of the established Church of England could be presented in imposing fashion. 10 If the church, the county court, and the plantation house served as the three principal centers of social activity in the settled communities of Virginia, then the state of community life in the Southside wilderness represented nearly the antithesis of that traditional order.

25 Although settlers tended to congregate in the eastern portion of the county (a predictable pattern given the east-towest flow of migration into the region before 1750), the dominant impulse among the county's settlers was toward dispersion. In early New England, or perhaps even in a Tidewater Virginia county, a population amounting to 650 households may have constituted a substantial settlement, but when those households were spread out over five thousand square miles of wilderness, the resulting mode of social organization was markedly different from either the New England town or the traditional Virginia county.
