Hunger was accompanied by the search for bread and this generated conflict. However, if E. P. Thompson’s views are accepted, this conflict was also due to popular belief in the immorality of the governors, who tolerated hoarding, price increases and speculation. Women were especially prominent in this type of collective protest, confronting the authorities and the security forces and occupying the front-line in demonstrations. This was exactly the sort of incident that took place at Peñaranda, in Salamanca, on 28 September 1931.

The fact that the majority of those involved in these crimes were day labourers is not without significance. They put up with the worst conditions and were the most wretched and uneducated sector of the community. ’13 Judging by the descriptions of the authorities, there was no shortage either of the type of protest thought to be characteristic of the ‘pre-industrial masses’ (although numerous studies have, of course, confirmed the persistence of these forms of protest in societies considered to be industrialised).

This distinction became even more marked with the advent of agrarian reform. For many reasons, including the cunning with which large landowners had managed to obscure the scale of their holdings, and because of various technical clauses relating to ‘rotation’ and ‘systematic leasing’, the law of agrarian reform seemed to threaten the expropriation of small proprietors more than of largescale landowners. The confusion and fear generated by the law were skilfully exploited by militant Catholic organisations.
