Some men went in for hunting and fishing, and horseback riding was popular among the wealthy, but football was still largely the mo- Page 14 nopoly of the great eastern colleges, with Harvard, Yale, and Princeton dominating the field, their big games being social as well as athletic events. The common assumption was still that sports were "kid stuff," and baseball was the only spectator sport that had really come into its own.

Weir Mitchell, was to write words that it is now difficult to read without a shudder, most Americans must have felt that he was already a year out of date. "The new century," said Dr. Mitchell, ''came in with God knows what in its hands and was welcomed.
